Harassment

CERN is committed to opposing harassment. If you are facing harassment at CERN in any form and for any reason there are several places you can go to for help.

Everyone working at CERN is bound by the Code of Conduct which clearly states:

  • Abstain from and actively discourage discrimination in all forms.
  • Avoid offending others by exercising restraint, and are aware that statements or actions not intended to be offensive to another person may be perceived as such.
  • Refrain from unpleasant or disparaging remarks or actions, in particular on the basis of sex, age, religion, beliefs, nationality, culture, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, status at CERN, disability, or family situation

You can read the full text on the dedicated Code of Conduct website.

The CERN Ombuds

CERN has a full time Ombuds whose job it is to help with informal resolution of interpersonal issues. The Ombuds is currently Sudeshna Datta-Cockerill and she can meet with you to give you information and advice confidentially.

You can find out a lot more about the role of the CERN Ombuds by visiting the Ombuds webpage.

The CERN Harassment Investigation Panel

The Harassment Investigation Panel (HIP) conducts formal investigations into harassment. More information is available on the HIP webpage.

LGBT CERN

If you want to talk things over confidentially with someone from the group you are very welcome to contact the Chair of the group. They will listen to you in confidence, and they can provide information. They may be able to accompany you to meet with the relevant CERN staff.

Monitoring harassment

We want to monitor how often harassment takes place at CERN, so if you contact the CERN Ombuds or Diversity Office about harassment you can tell the Chair of LGBT CERN in complete confidence. The Chair of LGBT CERN does not need to know any details about the incident(s) of harassment, or of the outcome of any meetings with support structures at CERN. You do not even need to tell us your name if you don’t want to.
